Do you know what to say to someone facing an unplanned pregnancy?
First, listen. You may want to jump to conclusions, give advice or suggest how she should proceed. That can be beneficial later but hear her out first.
Help her talk to the important people. Offer to sit with her while she tells her parents, the baby’s father, or other family members. It can be helpful to know she already has someone on her side when she shares the news.
Learn about the pregnancy centers in your area. In Cleveland, Tennessee, that would be us, New Hope Pregnancy Care Center! In a situation where someone believes they might be pregnant, it is important to confirm the pregnancy with a medical-grade pregnancy test and early ultrasound. New Hope provides both of these at no cost. You can even offer to go to her appointment with her.
If she has more questions, or isn’t quite ready to make an appointment, tell her about New Hope’s website, clevelandtnpregnancy.com. There, she has access to a live nurse chat 24/7 so she can ask any questions she might have about her symptoms and next steps.
It is important to note that unplanned pregnancy does not always mean unwanted. So, remember to listen first. If a person is scared, unsure, or feeling like they have no support, it is important to know what resources are available in your area

Do you know what’s going on in your community when it comes to abortion?
On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, which returned the authority to regulate abortion to the states.
In Tennessee, abortion is banned with very limited exceptions.
“Abortion – As enacted, enacts the “Human Life Protection Act,” which bans abortion in this state effective on the 30th day after the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade or an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to allow states to prohibit abortion; creates exception for situations where the abortion is necessary to prevent the death of pregnant woman or prevent serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of major bodily function; prohibits prosecution of a woman upon whom an abortion is performed or attempted.”[1]
“In 2025, Tennessee added a definition of “serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function” to the state’s gestational abortion limit. The definition explicitly includes the following nonexhaustive list: “previable preterm rupture of membranes; inevitable abortion; severe preeclampsia; mirror syndrome associated with fetal hydrops; and an infection that can result in uterine rupture or loss of fertility.” The new law also defines “inevitable abortion” as “a dilation of the cervix prior to viability of the pregnancy, either by preterm labor or cervical insufficiency.”[2]
There are other states that provide abortions, both the procedures and the pills, to residents of states with total or near-total abortion bans. These states, like North Carolina, Illinois, and Virginia, have shield laws in place that enable them to provide abortions to residents of states with bans, like Tennessee. In fact, we have seen abortion providers advertising in our area specifically saying, “Abortion Pill for Patients Traveling from Cleveland, TN.”
Medical Abortions (using pills) accounted for 63% of all abortions in the U.S. in 2023, according to Guttmacher Institute.[3] The Charlotte Lozier Institute states, “…this percentage is an undercount since it does not include abortions outside the formal health care system, or those done under shield laws. Furthermore, there have been reports of abortion drug stockpiling, and no one can know for sure where these drugs ultimately end up.”[4]
